Well, we got our wish.
We all said, ‘We can’t wait for 2021,’ and here it is.
But has anything changed?
Covid-19 has mutated.
Perhaps we need to as well. Because, if we bring the same script with us from 2020, we will get the same outcomes.
We all struggled to engage effectively in 2020. Teachers connected with their students’ minds but not their hearts. Students engaged with the material but not with each other. Employees got on with the job but felt isolated and uncertain. Managers connected as best they could, but motivating was difficult.
We were muted and off camera. We ticked boxes and completed time sheets.
Reflect on your connections
2021 will not magically present you with a new team (just as your team doesn’t magically get a new boss). The question is whether we can engage more effectively to produce better outcomes together. How will we connect in 2021?
Reflect on your meetings
Meetings take up so much of our time and are a cause of much frustration.
Online or in person, we must make them work. Dare to ask your team how your meetings could change to engage everyone and get the job done.
Be ready to hear some criticism. It’s OK. We were all experimenting in 2020.
Reflect on the questions you ask
Commit to meet with or call each team member weekly and ask questions that encourage engagement and growth. Here are some from Dan (The Leadership Freak):

- What challenges/opportunities are you facing?
- What are your priorities this week?
- How can I help you?
