Christmas pain and power — A poem

Christmas is coming. I know! It’s quite soon,
And the family is coming! Clear out the spare room!
Count up the numbers, aunts, uncles and all,
And don’t forget in-laws; they’re awaiting your call.

There are meals to prepare and the shopping to do.
What will we eat, and what should we brew?
There are presents to buy. Not those socks again.
And that cheap eau de toilette gets poured down the drain.

Why do we do this? Why do we fuss?
Is it all worth it, the pain and the stress?
‘tis the ‘spirit of Christmas’, that’s what we’re told
‘tis a whole lot of bother, if I may be so bold.

In all of the fuss and the family affairs,
In the buying of presents and the sorting of chairs,
The real Christmas gift, the heart of the story,
Is a child in a manger, bereft of his glory.

I wish you all a Christmas rich in peace and kindness and a New Year full of great opportunities.
