Do you Christmas? Religious festivals and the workplace

Well, I’m excited about Christmas. I have always enjoyed this special celebration and what it means on so many different levels. Yes, it is heavily commercialised, but the markets cannot destroy its heart, or take away the message of a baby born to be King.

There are, of course, so many religious festivals celebrated by South Africans of many different faiths. Should they be ignored in the workplace? No.

They are visible signs of those things that make us different from each other. And what they mean to each of us adds to the richness of our societies and workplaces. They also represent values that are desperately needed and should be treasured and encouraged in every business.

We must stop pretending we are all the same and avoiding conversations about our differences. When we recognise and celebrate our differences, we become richer and our workplace better able to engage with new ideas. Our customers also sense it, and they enjoy being with us.
And that is always a good thing.

Thank you to everyone who has enriched my life in 2019.

Best wishes from Simply Communicate for this festive season and for the New Year.
