Improving your hiring skills: A toolbox talk
It was great to be asked to speak at the Pietermaritzburg & Midlands Chamber of Business (PMCB) BizLink Network on 4 February. I gave a 30-minute toolbox talk (what I call bite-sized management) on the subject of successful hiring.
Sam Walton said:
‘The most important decision managers make is who they allow in the door.’
And HBR research shows 80 percent of staff turnover is caused by bad hiring decisions. Yet, when an employee is dismissed for poor performance or incapacity, how many of us admit to having made a bad hiring decision?
Our usual response is to blame the employee: ‘The employee lied, manipulated the interview, inflated their experience.’
All of which may be true, but the there will be those in the next lot of interviews who will do the same thing. Will we catch them? If we don’t take responsibility for having being hoodwinked, we will never improve our skills.
